Shanti Memorial Hospital, Performs Odisha’s First Telesurgery and Celebrates 100th Robotic Surgery

Cuttack: In a defining moment for India’s medical technology landscape, Shanti Memorial Hospital, one of Eastern India’s leading centers for advanced surgical care, has achieved two historic milestones under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Sreejoy Patnaik, renowned Surgical Gastroenterologist, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeon, and Chairman of the institution.

The hospital successfully performed the first telesurgery in the state of Odisha and the second in Eastern India using the SSI Mantra Surgical Robotic System, marking a significant step forward in India’s advancement in robotic and tele-surgical innovation.

The first telesurgery was performed on a patient requiring emergency surgery for an obstructed groin hernia, a potentially life-threatening condition. The procedure — a Robotic Transabdominal Preperitoneal (TAPP) repair — along with a Robotic Cholecystectomy, was conducted remotely between SS Innovations Headquarters in Gurugram, Haryana, and Shanti Memorial Hospital, Cuttack, spanning an impressive 1,760 kilometers.

This achievement underscores the life-saving potential of telesurgery, demonstrating how cutting-edge robotic technology can bridge vast geographical distances to deliver expert surgical care where it is needed most. Simultaneously, Shanti Memorial Hospital celebrated the successful completion of its 100th robotic surgery using the SSI Mantra platform — reaffirming its ongoing commitment to innovation, precision, and compassionate patient care.

“This milestone is not just a technological feat, but a humanitarian one,” said Prof. Dr. Sreejoy Patnaik. “The patient needed an emergency operation, and the telesurgical approach allowed us to deliver expert care instantly. This achievement proves that advanced surgical technology can and should serve patients across all parts of India.”

Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, Founder, Chairman & CEO of SS Innovations, added, “The success of this telesurgery demonstrates that India is leading the world in developing accessible, indigenous robotic surgical technology. The Mantra System continues to redefine what’s possible in modern surgery.”

The patient, who has since made a full recovery, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the surgical team and the hospital, saying, “I was in severe pain and was told I needed an urgent operation. I never imagined that such advanced surgery could be done here in Cuttack, and that too through a robot. I’m deeply thankful to Dr. Patnaik and his team for saving my life.”

The SSI Mantra Surgical Robotic System, developed indigenously by SS Innovations, symbolizes India’s growing capability in high-end medical engineering and its mission to make advanced surgical robotics both affordable and accessible to every region. With this milestone, Shanti Memorial Hospital and SS Innovations have set a new benchmark in India’s surgical landscape — reaffirming the nation’s leadership in next-generation healthcare delivery.
