Bhubaneswar: A remarkable and enriching special lecture titled “Exploring the Soul of Theatre and Films” was held at the Shruti Building, Sri Sri University on 15th Oct 2025, organized by the School of languages and Social Sciences(SoSC), Faculty of Arts, Communication and Indic Studies (FACIS). The session was graced by the presence of the eminent theatre personality Shri Ananta Mohapatra, whose towering contribution to Indian theatre continues to inspire generations. At the age of 90, his wisdom, clarity, and passion for the performing arts shone luminously throughout the event.
The festival was inaugurated by the Honourable Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tej Pratap, who, in his opening remarks, highlighted the university’s commitment to nurturing creativity and critical thought through the arts. Prof. Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, Dean of FACIS and the driving force behind the event, organized the festival with characteristic vision and grace, bringing together faculty and students for an immersive academic and aesthetic experience.
The session commenced with a soulful bhajan rendered by Dr. Devi Devyani, creating a serene and reflective atmosphere that perfectly set the tone for the talk. Dr. Rakesh Tripathy, Head of the School of Language and Social Sciences, delivered the opening address, emphasizing the need to revisit theatre and cinema as mirrors of human consciousness rather than mere entertainment.
When Shri Ananta Mohapatra began his address, the hall seemed to come alive with decades of experience and artistic insight. He traced the evolution of theatre in India, from ritualistic expressions in ancient traditions to its transformation into contemporary performance art. He reflected on the deep emotional and spiritual connection between theatre and life, explaining that “theatre begins where words end.” Drawing parallels between stage and screen, he emphasized that both art forms are driven by truth—not of the external world, but of the human spirit. His anecdotes from his own life, collaborations, and creative journey offered the audience rare glimpses into the golden age of Odia theatre.
The vote of thanks by Dr. Madhumita Das gracefully concluded the session, acknowledging the contributions of everyone involved. A special mention and heartfelt thanks to Mr. Trinath Majumder, Assistant Professor, FACIS, for creating the wonderful creatives that beautifully captured the spirit of this special lecture session and enhanced its visibility. The auditorium was filled with students and faculty members of FACIS, all deeply moved and inspired by the veteran’s words.
